New visiting researcher

The IEE-ULB is delighted to welcome Dr. Mario Munta for a research stay at our Institute. Dr. Munta is an Assistant Professor in Public Policy and European Public Policy at the Faculty of Political Science of the University of Zagreb.

He obtained the title of Doctor of Philosophy in Political Science at the Central European University in Budapest, Hungary, in 2020. His PhD thesis focused on “The influence of the European Semester on Employment Policies in Central and Eastern Europe; Mechanisms, Conditions and Policy Change”.

Dr. Munta will be at the IEE-ULB from 24 January 2022 until 27 February 2022, under the sponsorship of Prof. Amandine Crespy.

His research at the IEE-ULB

The research activities of Dr. Munta at the IEE-ULB will focus on (national) ownership of the EU’s Recovery and Resilience Facility, which falls within the scope of the IEE-ULB research theme “Europe as an area of economic and social regulation”. He will take a closer look at the democratic legitimacy of the recent changes to the day-to-day governance of socio-economic policies in the EU, compared to the instruments introduced in the period following the European economic and sovereign debt crisis.

During his stay at IEE-ULB as a visiting researcher, Dr. Munta plans to conduct interviews with officials at national country desks in ECFIN and EMCO, officials from the RECOVER task force in SECGEN, and EU social partners – Business Europe, SMEunited and ETUC. He also wants to use his time in Brussels to further develop his research as per advice from Prof. Amandine Crespy who has been among the leading author in the related topic.

How to become a visiting researcher at the IEE-ULB

Each academic year, the Institute for European Studies of the ULB hosts a select group of visiting researchers who work around our 4 research themes. During their stay, they are supervised by one – sometimes two – of the IEE-affiliated professors.

Interested candidates are invited to submit their applications which must contain: an up-to-date CV, a research project highlighting the link to one or several of the IEE’s four research themes, the proposed research period, and the name of the IEE-affiliated professor who has agreed to act as the researcher’s supervisor.

Applications should be send to Prof. Ramona Coman, Dr. Jozefien Van Caeneghem and Ms. Michela Arcarese.

Decisions on visiting research applications are taken by the Council of the IEE, which gathers five times per year. For the second term of the 2021-2022 academic year, the dates are:

  • 11 March 2022
  • 19 May 2022
  • 23 August 2022.
