The unexpected death of David Sassoli, President of the European Parliament, leaves us with the memory of an unforgettable smile and an idealistic personality, endowed with a rare dignity and coherence. Affable, facilitating, even gentle (‘mite’, according to former Commission President Romano Prodi), able to reconcile the availability for dialogue and the importance of the emotional side of politics with fidelity to his principles. Sassoli was the subject of countless tributes, very varied and sometimes very moving: a spontaneous assembly in Brussels in front of the European Parliament on the very day of his death; informal speeches by all the European authorities; eulogies and memories by Italian parliamentarians, including his political enemies.
