New visiting researcher

The IEE-ULB welcomes Mr. Sven Schreurs , PhD candidate in Political and Social Sciences at the European University Institute.

He holds a Master’s Degree in Modern History and International Relations (2021) and a Bachelor’s degree in European Languages and Cultures (2017) from the University of Groningen.

Mr. Sven Schreurs will be based at the IEE-ULB from 06 March to 06 April 2023. Professor Nathalie Brack will supervise his research stay.

His research at the IEE-ULB

The title of Mr. Sven Schreurs’ doctoral thesis is “Between social rights and social investment: The evolution of EU social policy from Maastricht to the ‘Next Generation”. The research aims to explain how the growing scope and changing direction of the social policy commitment of the EU has built up since the agreement of the ‘Social Chapter’ in 1991.

During his research stay, Mr. Sven Schreurs research will focus on the shifting boundaries of ‘social sovereignty’ and legitimacy in relation to the (regulatory) social policy activity of the EU in the post-crisis period. To explore this question, he will follow historical process-tracing research that examines the design and adoption of EU social legislation and policy coordination.
