Giuseppe Cannata at the IEE-ULB

The title of Mr. Giuseppe Cannata ’s doctoral thesis is “From Knowledge to Influence: Re-Thinking the Role of the European Commission in EU Policy-Making”. The research aims to rethink supranational influence in the light of the Commission’s ‘dual nature’ as both a sui generis executive for the EU, with preferences and resources on its own, and a complex bureaucratic organisation that has access to policy-relevant knowledge, which allow it to deal with increasing uncertainty in EU policy-making.

During his research stay, Mr. Giuseppe Cannata’s research will focus on developing a causal explanation linking knowledge to influence. To explore this argument, he will focus on two policy fields in which the Commission has been active in conjunction with recent crises: climate and energy and health policy.
