Waseda Brussels Office, together with the Institute of European Studies of ULB, has the pleasure to invite you to the Waseda Brussels Office Annual Conference on 13 September 2022 at Bip – Maison de la Région, Rue Royale 2-4, 1000 Bruxelles.

About the event Japan and Europe: New Technologies and Regulation

The conference will focus on the highly topical subject of “New technologies and regulation in Japan and Europe”.

Artificial intelligence and intellectual property are at the heart of legal discussions and academic debates. The dynamics of the mutual influence between AI and PI raise a topical debate that will be addressed from an interdisciplinary perspective involving lawyers and engineers.

In addition, gathering and use of private data by governments have increased significantly in pursuit of various policy goals (health, security, migration management, etc.). This trend reflects broader societal changes and is linked to the digitalization of social interactions. The WBO Annual Conference 2022 will be an opportunity to discuss, from a cross-cutting perspective, how trust in governments can vary from region to region and be influenced by national contexts, as well as to question whether increased transparency or clear legal safeguards can foster this trust.

The conference will also focus on how emerging technologies, including the internet of things, artificial intelligence, quantum computing or blockchain, have a crucial impact on cybersecurity. These emerging technologies are opportunities, but also new challenges and threats. The panels of discussions will try to understand the development of these technologies on the one hand, and to consider the possibilities of regulating the risks and threats created by their misuse on the other hand.
